Overview

Situated along the Tiber River in the central-western region of Italy, The Eternal City beckons those whose passion for food, art, culture, and history is inexhaustible. Wake up each day to Italy's beauty and Old World charm, from dazzling azure coasts and majestic snow-capped mountains to urban centers that never cease to delight with their architectural wonders and warm, welcoming locals.

Situated in the heart of Italy's historic capital, ºÚÁÏÍø911Rome offers a wide selection of courses that attract students from all academic disciplines, from liberal arts and science majors to engineering, pre-med, and business school students. The city is your classroom, and you will take classes inside the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, and the Italian Parliament to delve into the heroes and heroines who once walked the streets of Rome and shaped its destiny. Outside the classroom, you're encouraged to explore some of the world's most breathtaking cultural destinations, like the Vatican, Saint Peter's Basilica, and the Spanish Steps. Taste the freshness of authentic Italian cuisine and learn to replicate your new favorite dishes from the ingredients you gathered in the famous Campo de' Fiori's markets.

Experience Rome on your terms by customizing your study abroad experience on the Open Campus Block program. Take one, two, or three six-week blocks, and select your courses from various subject areas. Whether you spend one six-week block in The Eternal City – or up to 18 – you're sure to have an unforgettable time.

BUILD YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVENTURE

Designed for students who require a flexible study abroad experience, CIEE's Open Campus Block program was thoughtfully structured to be completely customizable. Select one, two, or three six-week blocks per term at any ºÚÁÏÍø911Open Campus Block location.

Your Destination

Rome is simply a one-of-a-kind destination. Once the center of Western civilization, and with a history spanning almost 3,000 years, Rome houses some of the world’s most-visited attractions. It also includes Vatican City, an independent country within Rome’s boundaries and the seat of the Pope, not to mention the home to the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Thanks to its unparalleled beauty, Rome repeatedly hosts international movie productions – more recently for “The House of Gucci,†the upcoming “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning,†and Angelina Jolie’s “Without Blood.†

ºÚÁÏÍø911Rome occupies the main floor of the prestigious Palazzo Capizucchi and it is a short walk from some of the main landmarks of the city, such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.

ºÚÁÏÍø911wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local ºÚÁÏÍø911staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Rome.

Academic Culture

Each six-week course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. ºÚÁÏÍø911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Rome when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.

Class Format

Courses taught at ºÚÁÏÍø911Rome are typically for ºÚÁÏÍø911students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday and meet three  times per week (besides language courses that meet four times per week), and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas. Some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. Courses at the local university, Roma Tre, are taken with Italian and other international students.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for ºÚÁÏÍø911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Course Notes

  • Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI†denotes courses that are offered at multiple ºÚÁÏÍø911locations.
  • Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
  • Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.

Hybrid Courses

Most courses are taught face-to-face and offered only for students at one location. ºÚÁÏÍø911offers some courses in a hybrid format, available to multiple program locations to increase course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other ºÚÁÏÍø911locations join live online. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEEâ€, and the title will include the location of instruction. Regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential, and intercultural learning for all.

Academic Projects

  • Academic Projects will be offered onsite ) or remotely, dependent on availability and in compliance with local health and safety regulations.
  • Academic Project placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements in location or within the Open Campus Block network either in-person or remotely. The process is highly individualized and goal-oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
  • Students applying for an Academic Project must submit additional materials during the course selection process.

Language Classes

  • During course selection, students interested in a non-introductory Italian language course will be instructed to take an online Italian language assessment to determine their proficiency level. Enrollment will be finalized on-site and is based on assessment outcomes.
  • Students may opt into the non-credit “Survival Italian†course during the on-site orientation
