When students study abroad with CIEE, there are several housing options available depending on the program and location, including:

Living abroad is when students have the opportunity to move internationally to another country outside of their home country. In the context of studying abroad, students move to another country to earn college credit, meet new friends, and explore a new culture and location.

������911programs include housing contracted in advance and vetted for location, safety and housing provider compliance. ������911housing often includes shared rooms and bathrooms, and may require a commute to the city center and/or ������911or university campuses. 

������911receives numerous housing accommodation requests for private rooms or bathrooms, greater proximity to campus, or permission to reside in non-CIEE/Independent Housing. Participants are advised that these options will be considered only when the request is made within the specified timeframe and clinical history and professional documentation clearly support that such accommodation is necessary to ensure access, for example due to a wheelchair requirement or other mobility related disability. All housing related requests must be submitted on the Accommodation Form and supported by verification from the Participant’s university accommodation office. ������911will not accept letters from treating physicians in lieu of university accommodation office letters. For autonomous students who do not have a U.S. university or institution associated with their application, ������911will accept a letter from the Participant’s treating physician accompanied by clinical history supporting the claim that such accommodation is necessary for access to the program. Housing requests made without a completed Accommodation Form and supporting documentation will not be processed. 

While ������911does make resources and academic accommodations available to students with mental health diagnoses, the volume of housing related requests made on these grounds can present a significant challenge to ������911in housing procurement and program safety management. As a result, non-physical disability diagnoses, such as anxiety, depression, and ADD conditions are not considered as a basis to change housing or seek Independent Housing.*

������911requires advance notice of at least 45 days to facilitate housing related accommodations (or by April 15 for summer programs). In all such requests, ������911will assess (1) whether the accommodation is medically necessary to ensure access to the program and (2) whether the accommodation can reasonably be made in existing ������911housing. If ������911cannot meet a medically necessary housing need from within our housing stock, the Participant may be permitted to live in Independent Housing at their own expense, provided the Independent Housing form is signed by both Participant and their home institution. If an Independent Housing request is approved due to medical necessity and before program start date, Participant may be entitled to a refund of the housing component of the ������911program fee. 
All housing change requests made after program start, including requests based on disability and medical grounds, will be subject to availability and may require payment of surcharge on any upgrade within ������911housing. **

Applications for Independent Housing made after the program start date, or approved on grounds other than medical necessity, will not be eligible for any refund of ������911housing costs. 

*An accommodation may be unreasonable if it: (1) imposes an undue financial and/or administrative burden; (2) fundamentally alters ������911housing policies; (3) poses a direct threat to the health and safety of others or would cause substantial property damage to the property of others, including ������911property; and/or (4) is otherwise unreasonable to the operation of ������911or is not a relevant accommodation necessary to ensure equal access; (5) the diagnosis does not meet the legal definition of a disability.
**In limited circumstances, ������911may elect to move a Participant without surcharge if the move is prescribed by a local treating physician as a medical necessity for an emergent and contagious condition. 

Participants with accessibility, medical, and/or learning disabilities that require specific housing accommodations are encouraged to apply to ������911programs and to engage with ������911in advance to prepare for successful participation in study abroad experiences. This policy is designed to help guide Participants, Study Abroad offices, and University Accommodation offices in planning for a ������911Study Abroad program.

While ������911reserves limited  funding to support Participants with disabilities, Participants should be aware that U.S. federal and state laws do not require their university or ������911to provide funding for accommodations and facilities beyond U.S. borders. 

As a reminder, students are not obligated to disclose their disability in any personal statements during the application process if that is their choice, and ������911does not factor disability disclosures into admission decisions. However, due to the complexity in sourcing accommodations internationally, ������911may not be able to support housing accommodation requests made less than 45 days before program start date. Additionally, spring program Participants should note that accommodation inquiries made during the week of December 22 – January 1 (when ������911is closed for the holiday) may not receive a response until after January 3. 

For any disability and/or medical accommodations, you may begin speaking with your ������911Study Abroad Advisor at any time during your application process. For housing, we require documentation no later than 45 days prior to your program start (or April 15 for summer programs) in your MY������911portal. A Participant who requests medically necessary housing accommodations less than 45 days before program start date may be advised to postpone participation.

For requests made at least 45 days before program start, the ������911Enrollment Team will communicate with the program site staff about the specific accommodations requested and inform the Participant whether such accommodations can be reasonably provided in the student’s selected program location. They will also advise whether the accommodation will result in any additional billing or expense. It is the Participant’s responsibility to ensure any funding required for special services abroad is arranged well in advance. If funding is not available from university disability accommodation funds, Participants are responsible for all costs associated with special services abroad.
