Academics

Academics

Students have flexibility to design their own academic load taking options from the following scheme:

  • Courses taught in English at top Argentine universities: Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and Universidad del Salvador
  • For those proficient in Spanish, there is the option to take courses in Spanish at Universidad del Salvador, subject to Spanish Level Placement in 911
  • Students can also opt for courses delivered in English and/or Spanish by 911

Before your arrival onsite, you will have a one-on-one academic counseling with local staff to review your options and decide whether your proposed schedule is logistically feasible (commuting between campuses may take between 30-45 minutes).

Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT), Av. Figueroa Alcorta 7350, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina

University Torcuato di Tella is one of the most prestigious universities in Argentina and Latin America. It is known for its high-quality standards and reputation among international university rankings. It has a broad range of academic offerings, with 11 graduate courses and more than 30 postgraduate courses. With around 10,000 students and a state-of-the-art campus, its study areas include architecture and urban studies, arts, political science and international studies, law, economics, education, social and historical studies, math and statistics, business, and design.

Universidad del Salvador (U. Sal) Av. Callao 801, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The University of Salvador is a Jesuit university which was officially established in 1958. The university is in downtown Buenos Aires and has campuses in other parts of Argentina. The university has six schools: agronomy, art and architecture, design, modern languages, oriental studies, and veterinary medicine. Courses are taught at both undergraduate and graduate level.

Academic Culture

As Argentina is in the south of the equator in the southern hemisphere, the fall semester roughly coincides with the U.S. academic year, from August to December and spring runs from late February/early March to July. The U.S. and Argentine educational systems have significant differences. Argentine students follow specialized paths of study to gain expertise in one field. Courses focus on more in-depth analysis of a given field study; hence students are expected to take great initiative and responsibility for learning and completing assignments. Students must take all exams (mid-terms and finals) within the program's official dates.

Courses taught in Spanish and English at partner universities tend to gather local and international students who are enthusiasts of the language and want to practice more. Classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. In terms of attendance, both host institutions have a policy requiring students to attend more than 80% of class time. Each host institution has its own learning management platform.

CIEE-offered courses are exclusively for 911students across programs, and they are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. Courses usually go from Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 911instructors use Canvas as their academic platform. Communications, notifications, along with assignments, grades, and readings are stored and disseminated through this means.

Both 911and host institution classes tend to meet twice a week.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

In general, the Argentine pedagogical teaching approach is more teacher-centered, with the instructor mainly leading the lectures and facilitating the course discussions. Instructors at local universities tend not to have office hours. Instead, they can be reached by email, the corresponding academic platform, or right after or before class time.

To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Buenos Aires when classes are in session and plan any trips for the long weekends.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 911courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 911location.

Grading

911reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Just as with 911courses, final grades for local institution courses are a compound of components of different nature, such as attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Primary assessments (assessments with more weight) are usually two or three partial written exams. The final examination may be held in either oral or written format (or both) and is usually worth around 30% of the final grade for the course.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 911student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.” “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 911students. Please see the 911Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below.
