Overview

If you are eager to learn more about public health in Latin America and have a flair for the Spanish language, Buenos Aires is the place for you. Whether your chosen field is biology, medicine, nursing, or a related field, you’ll gain an international perspective and study the ins and outs of public health systems in a developing country. Courses are taught in Spanish at 911Buenos Aires and complemented with co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding.

This dynamic eight-week program delves into a comprehensive exploration of community and public health issues within the Argentine context. By considering diverse social scenarios, participants gain valuable insights into the intricacies of healthcare in Argentina. The program covers topics such as healthcare management, policies, bioethics, and health promotion.

All three courses are designed to enrich students’ awareness of public health dynamics by combining classroom learning with visits to healthcare centers and cultural immersion. Students will take three courses: classes on Pre-Professional Healthcare Issues, participate in a Community Health Practicum and

Additionally, students are required to take one Advanced Spanish course along with Pre-Professional Healthcare Issues and Community Health Practicum. Advanced Spanish options are Spanish Language-Advanced I, Spanish Language Advanced II and Advanced Spanish for Healthcare Professionals. This course will increase student´s public health-related vocabulary and facilitate friendly conversations with people in the community and members of the healthcare team. Spanish courses to be delivered are contingent upon enrollment numbers and the proficiency level of the students. Please approve all Spanish courses with your advisors before arrival.

Our instructors bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. They specialize in various areas of public health, including epidemiology, qualitative and quantitative research methods, social and health public policy, bioethics, and health promotion.

All students take three courses including one Spanish language course and two 911content courses taught in Spanish.

Total credit: 10 U.S. semester/15 quarter credits per session

Academic Culture

All coursework is conducted in Spanish. The Professional Healthcare Issues course includes direct instruction, field trips, course material, class discussions, and reviews of public health-related current events. For the Community Health Practicum, students visit a variety of health care facilities to better understand their daily dynamics. During the assigned field courses, students will engage in the academic and social components. Guided by faculty, students will visit public and private medical institutions and community centers, and participate in vaccination campaigns, blood drives, and other activities related to their field of interest. Both courses feature guest lecturers from professionals in the public health field. Courses are open only to 911students.

The pace of this intensive program is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. 911courses follow U.S. academic culture and standards. Special focus is paid to experiential learning and outside-classroom activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.

Class Format

Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday and attendance is strictly enforced for classes and required co-curricular activities. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our Canvas e-learning platform.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and exams.  Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in the course syllabi.

In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
