Designed for students across a wide variety of studies – particularly humanities, social sciences, and engineering – this Arts + Sciences program in England’s capital city will treat you to a once-in-a-lifetime experience in British society and culture.

When class is in session, you’ll spend a full semester studying at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), one of England’s top-ranked universities known for its high-quality education and research. Home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, London is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. London is at the cutting edge of the arts scene and provides access to music, fashion, museums (all of which are free!), comedy, and theater. There are abundant opportunities for enjoying London – with eight Royal Parks right in the heart of the city and more green space than any comparable city in the world.

��911London is within walking distance of all the tourist highlights of the city, but it is also tucked away in the University district. Located in a beautiful Georgian square just moments from the British Museum and 10 minutes from Trafalgar Square and its art galleries, ��911London has a lounge, cafe and study areas – perfect for meeting up with fellow students outside of class. It is right in the heart of central London and the perfect place for exploring the city. In the Center, you are a 10-minute walk from the British Library, a 15-minute walk from seeing the free-ranging pelicans in St James’s Park, and a 20-minute walk to the London Eye.

HOUSING

Students taking four courses at QMUL will also be eligible for campus housing. Housing is allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis and successful applicants will share a flat with a mixture of home students and other international students. A typical room will include a single bed (twin rooms are not available) and either an ensuite or shared bathroom. Students will also have use of a shared open-plan kitchen/living area and laundry facilities.

Unsuccessful applicants for campus housing will be housed by ��911London:

Standard Housing: Includes a compact double studio room at a student residence hall or a double room within a shared apartment. Shared apartments feature a kitchen, bathroom, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Residence halls boast common areas, a small kitchen, shared bathroom, and laundry facilities. Housing is located under 45 minutes from ��911London.

Select Housing: Includes a double studio room at a student residence hall, with an en-suite bathroom and a shared kitchen. The residence hall boasts common areas, study rooms, and laundry facilities shared with other students. The residence hall is located approximately 30 minutes from ��911London.

Select housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Academics

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL)
QMUL is composed of five institutions founded in 1785 and onwards. In 2000, it took on its formal name, Queen Mary University of London. Today, QMUL is the only campus university in London. Roughly 25,000+ students study onsite across its five campuses, with the majority located at Mile End. At any given time, there are more than 1,000 study abroad students living and learning at QMUL, making this university a wonderful place to connect with like-minded international students. QMUL’s roots are in STEM, humanities, business, and law, and students can expect an immersive British international university experience while here.

Teaching takes place mid-September to mid-December for the fall semester and in almost all cases, fall-only students will complete their assignments within the teaching term. Exception: those studying modules within the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) will have online examinations in January. All students should check their course/module choices carefully on arrival so that they know what to expect.

Mile End Campus at QMUL
QMUL’s Mile End Campus offers students access to shops, cafes, a student union, a gym, student doctor and advisory services, numerous libraries, public parks, London buses, and two tube stations are within a three-minute walk. Students can expect to travel between 40 to 45 minutes from QMUL to ��911London (via The Underground system).

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for ��911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and ��911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

All students take four courses/modules per semester, for a total of 16 U.S. semester credits. Courses/modules can be chosen from a catalog of 950+ choices at levels 4, 5, and 6. Some courses/modules may not be available to study abroad (associate) students, but these can be filtered out when searching for options. ��911students are also not permitted to enroll in medicine or dentistry courses.

Academic Culture

Classes at QMUL are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students are expected to complete two to three hours of independent work for every hour in class. Some courses (e.g. languages) meet for 10 hours per week. Others (e.g. STEM) meet for six to eight hours per week with an expectation of 20-25 hours of independent work outside of labs/seminars/lectures. Others (e.g. history) meet for one-hour lectures plus a seminar per module per week with an expectation of three hours of work per one hour in class per module. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture and use their language skills with local residents.

Class Format

Classes include seminars, lectures, and sometimes labs. They will require students to do independent work outside of class.

Grading

A final assignment will be administered at the end of each course. Dates for these are released at the beginning of each course and should be checked carefully before booking return journeys.

Course Information

Students take four courses/modules per semester (4 U.S. credits each), but they are not limited to one subject area; they can take courses across any discipline except medicine or dentistry. Preference for course/module allocation is given to those who require a course in order to stay on track to graduate from their home institution. Otherwise, course/module options requested by study abroad (associate) students are viewed equally alongside those requested by home students.
