Academics

As a global intern in London, you鈥檒l work in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of industries. Extracurricular excursions and cultural activities in and around London complement your coursework and immerse you in the history and culture of the city.

This semester-long program includes 6 weeks of academic coursework and a 12-week internship and academic seminar. Class environment varies depending on the course and is designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards.

Arizona State University:鈥Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous sessions that fit within the 黑料网911academic calendar, so you can study abroad with 黑料网911while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

There are no specific language requirements for this program.

Additional Requirements

Students participating in the London Semester Global Internship program must maintain full-time student status at their home university while participating in the 黑料网911program and must have matriculated full-time at their home university at least three months prior to application. Students should be prepared to obtain a signed letter from their home university confirming student matriculation details.

Additional visa restrictions may apply and 黑料网911will advise students as part of the early application process.

Please refer to the detailed Program Essential Eligibility Criteria.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 黑料网911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 黑料网911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

Upon completing the two electives during the first 6-week block, students participate in an integrated academic seminar taught alongside the 12-week internship. The two 6-week elective courses, seminar and internship are required components of the program.

Explore literature, history, religion, and more with our course offerings. Students will enroll in:

  • Two Block I 黑料网911courses offered on a 6-week academic block system.
  • 12-week internship with an integrated online academic course.
  • Optional additional 黑料网911elective course in Block II and/or Block III. All students are required by British law to take at least TWO courses (in any Block) with instruction from London. No exceptions. Due to the demands of the internship in Blocks II & III, we strongly recommend you fulfill this requirement in Block I.
  • Online Course Options: substitute one ASU online course

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 黑料网911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 黑料网911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

黑料网911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment for elective courses typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion. The integrated academic course which correlates with the 12-week internship is taught primarily in an online learning environment to complement the internship experience.  Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by 黑料网911and the host organization.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You鈥檒l receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Students begin by taking two Block I CIEE courses offered on a 6-week academic block system. All courses are customized for and open only to 黑料网911students. Elective classes include a combination of lectures, group work, presentations, and discussions. The second part of the program includes a12-week 黑料网911internship and academic seminar and one optional 黑料网911elective course in Block II and/or Block III.

Except for the required Internship course, all courses are offered with the 黑料网911Open Campus program, and will therefore be shared with students on the program, and many are available in multiple 黑料网911locations. To help ensure you are able to enroll in the courses you need, some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. However, regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location.

ASU online courses meet in 鈥渟essions鈥 that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 黑料网911courses begin or end. You鈥檒l need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you鈥檙e given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 黑料网911location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Final grades are based on class participation, homework, individual project work, presentations, and midterm and final exams. In the integrated academic course which correlates with the 12-week internship, students should expect to be assessed via assignments as outlined in the syllabus. Internship supervisors provide a written evaluation of progress towards internship goals at the conclusion of the placement.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 黑料网911student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.鈥 鈥淧ass/fail鈥 or 鈥淎udit鈥 is not allowed for 黑料网911students. Please see the 黑料网911Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.

All students have the same instructor and meet as one class. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student鈥檚 location to promote local, experiential and intercultural learning for all.
