Your Destination

If you’re looking to spend time in one of the world’s most prominent cultural, finance, and commerce centers, look no further than Paris. A top tourist destination, the capital of France, and the country’s most populous city, Paris offers some of the greatest sites in the world: The Arc de Triomphe, the Château de Versailles, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower, just to name a few.

The city boasts a modern, vibrant, and diverse culture that is turned toward the 21st century. Its peaceful parks, lively nightlife, and open-air markets with fresh food and flowers are scattered around residential areas, and a bakery is never more than a short walk away. You can’t miss Paris’ iconic stone Haussmann buildings lining its bustling boulevards, which contrast with the impressive modern glass and steel structures situated in La Défense, Paris’ financial district. From neighborhood to neighborhood, there is much to see along Paris’ winding cobble-lined streets.

911wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local 911staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Paris.

Academic Culture

911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.

At the local universities, depending on courses and course format, you may have classes run in similar styles as 911courses, or courses which are more formal and consist of lectures with little class participation. In the French higher education system, great importance is placed on oral presentations and written essays. Professors also expect students to work independently and determine their own study and reading schedules.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Courses taught at the 911study center are typically for 911students only and classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday and meet once or twice per week. Business school classes are scheduled Monday-Friday.

Professors also expect students to work independently and determine their own study and reading schedules.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 911courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 911location.

Grading

French higher education grades are based on a combination of midterm and final examinations, research papers, and oral presentations, and are on the French grading scale of 0-20, which 911then converts into recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used for 911classes. Students are graded on the basis of class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 911student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.” “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 911students. Please see the 911Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.

Official fall exams at EDC and ISC take place in late December (Fall semester) and late April/early May (spring semester). While the host institutions instruct faculty to allow for early exams with single-semester international students across the board, as a precaution these early exams should be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor at the start of the regular semester session, during the add/drop period. It is up to the discretion of each professor to offer exams before the start of the official examination periods. Professors are not required to offer early exams; therefore, housing will be covered until exams are complete; students must remain on-site until assessment is complete.
