Your Destination

Berlin is the dynamic and fascinating capital city of a country with a complex history. As a center of German cultural and intellectual life, the influence of Berlin reverberates around the world. It offers an incredibly wide range of cultural offerings and has a moderate cost of living, making it an attractive place for artists and young people. Berlin is a fast-paced city in which to work, live, or study. 

Berlin’s 24-hour public transportation system is extensive and connects the areas of the city accessibly and quickly. 911Berlin is steps from a neighborhood subway station with easy access to the rest of the city.  Located in the heart of the Kreuzberg district, 911Berlin offers students easy access to a large public market hall, restaurants and cafés, and a variety of shops. 

Students commute to their internships and most program activities via local public transportation. Introduction to the system is provided during orientation and students are responsible for securing their own public transportation pass. Program housing is convenient to public transportation and all internship locations are accessible.

911wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local 911staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Berlin.

As a global intern in Berlin, you’ll work in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of innovative industries and take an integrated online academic course. Extra-curricular cultural activities in and around Berlin complement your internship and coursework. 

This eight-week program includes a full-time internship and an integrated online academic course.

Requirements

Students participate in an academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment alongside the eight-week, full-time internship. Participation in the integrated academic course and internship are mandatory for all participants.

Academic Culture

Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship project and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by 911and the host organizations. The academic course is designed to prepare students for leadership in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse workforce.

Class Format

Students participate in an eight-week 911full-time internship and academic course taught in an online learning environment. Class and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city during the work week.

Grading

Students will be assessed via assignments and activities related to the academic course, including but not limited to: online discussion forums, reflection papers, analysis of readings, an internship work plan, and feedback from internship supervisor. Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress toward goals.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
