Overview

Twelve exceptional student leaders will be selected for a transformative summer internship program in Dublin, Ireland, where they will draw inspiration from the legacies of two remarkable social justice leaders: Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell.  

During this unique eight-week program, Douglass-O鈥機onnell Global Interns will spend June 13 to August 9, 2025 in a fully immersive internship at an Irish organization and accompanying academic seminar. During extracurricular activities throughout the program, the interns will also participate in a special exploration of the influence Daniel O鈥機onnell had on Frederick Douglass and their lifetime legacies as successful businessmen and leaders of social change.

Students seeking a rich international experience that combines real-world work experience in Ireland with an exciting overview of Irish history and culture are encouraged to apply. Join us in Dublin for a summer of growth, learning, and the pursuit of a better, more inclusive world.

  • Visit Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum including a visit to Daniel O鈥機onnell Monument and final resting place.

The 2024 Douglass-O鈥機onnell Global Interns will spend June 13 to August 9, 2025 in Dublin and participate in a in a fully immersive internship at an Irish organization and accompanying academic seminar while on the program. Students will also explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass and Daniel O鈥機onnell as successful businessmen and leaders of social change. .

The program pays tribute to Frederick Douglass鈥 transformative experience visiting Ireland more than 175 years ago, when Douglass was embraced by the Irish people and met the famous Irish reformer, Daniel O鈥機onnell. This immersive opportunity celebrates their exceptional contributions to society and their notable business acumen, inspiring young professionals to emulate their success and apply their principles in the modern world. Co-sponsored by CIEE, the Government of Ireland, and the African American Irish Diaspora Network, the program pays homage to these distinguished figures by integrating the values of equality, entrepreneurship, and advocacy into a dynamic and educational internship experience.

Additional Requirements

  • Be a current undergraduate freshman, sophomore, or junior from an accredited institution 
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident 
  • Be Pell-eligible 
  • Submit a complete application no later than November 29, 2024

After the program, Douglass-O鈥機onnell Global Interns commit to sharing their international internship experience with their campus community to promote the power of international education and encourage peers to study or intern abroad.

You must secure a letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well (university staff member, mentor, advisor, boss), and can address your leadership potential, ability to succeed in an international work environment, and history of service.

Requirements

Students participate in an academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment alongside the eight-week, full-time internship. Participation in the integrated academic course and internship is mandatory for all participants.

Total credit: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits

Internship: 6 U.S. semester/9 quarter credits; 15 integrated academic course hours, 225-300 internship placement hours

Academic Culture

Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship project and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by 黑料网911and the host organizations. The academic course is designed to prepare students for leadership in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse workforce.

Class Format

Class and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city when classes are in session.

Grading

Students will be assessed via assignments and activities related to the academic course, including but not limited to: online discussion forums, reflective papers, individual or group presentations, analysis of readings, an internship work plan, and feedback from the internship supervisor. Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress toward goals.
