Professional Development
Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their course selection.
For-credit Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by 911Rome Academic staff and home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Rome. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to country, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics.
A for-credit part-time internship allows students the opportunity to have practical work experience in a company within biology, engineering, technology, or science sectors. A working level of Italian might be required to secure an internship, especially for positions within teams that predominantly operate in Italian. In addition to the on-site experience, students participating in an internship program have a weekly classroom component, which provides academic support to their practical experience. One example of a possible STEM internship is with the biology department at La Sapienza.

Housing & Meals
Housing
911Rome offers diverse housing options, including shared apartments, residence halls, and homestays located in exciting residential areas. They are conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, shops, and public transportation and within a maximum commute to 911Rome of 60-70 minutes. The commute to LUISS University may be longer.
Standard Housing: Includes a single or double room at a homestay, or a double or triple room at a shared apartment or at a residence hall, all located within a 60-70-minute commute of 911Rome. The commute to LUISS University may be longer.
- Homestays: Homestays include a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family. Breakfast and dinner are included.
- Apartments: Apartments boast a kitchen, common area, and access to laundry facilities shared with others. Meals are not included.
- Residence halls: Residence halls feature kitchen access, shared laundry facilities, and common spaces. Meals are not included.
Select Housing: Includes double and triple occupancy rooms in apartments or residence halls, within a 45-minute commute of 911Rome and LUISS university. Select housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Academics
The ETS program at 911Rome offers students a rigorous and immersive learning experience, combining classroom instruction with hands-on activities that explore the city’s rich cultural and historical context. Courses are designed to foster critical thinking, cultural understanding, and intellectual growth, ensuring students gain a deeper appreciation for their subjects while engaging with Rome’s unique academic environment.
911courses may include topics such as global history, Italian culture, mythology, nutrition, psychology, sustainability, and the Italian Renaissance. Each course incorporates co-curricular activities, such as field trips, workshops, and guest lectures, that bring classroom concepts to life. Students also have access to internships, providing diverse opportunities for academic and professional development.
Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS): is an independent, international university that focuses on the following disciplines: Economics and Finance, Business and Management, Law, and Political Science, including courses at the intersection of Technology and Business. It is one of the top universities in Italy for the above disciplines and is ranked #22 in QS WUR Ranking.
Fall exams at LUISS may extend through the end of December, and Spring exams at LUISS may extend through the end of May. Students must remain on location until all assessments are complete. Should a LUISS exam be scheduled after the program end date, 911will guarantee housing. As it is impossible to confirm your exam schedule prior to your arrival, please book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.
Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions during the semester and 6-week sessions in the summer that fit within the 911academic calendar, so you can study abroad with 911while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
