Overview

Come discover the city that invented globalization and is currently host to one of the largest communities of international students in Europe: Amsterdam! Whether you decide to call Amsterdam home for one or two six-week blocks, during this Open Campus Block program you鈥檒l learn about the liberal and progressive policies of the Netherlands in CIEE-catered courses across various subject areas while experiencing the Amsterdam lifestyle and unique gezelligheid (conviviality) of Dutch society.

At 黑料网911Amsterdam, dive into the city鈥檚 rich past, critically revisit the Dutch Golden Age, and learn how Amsterdam is preparing for future challenges faced by sustainable cities. All of that in a single place; a city at the forefront of economic innovation with policies built on 鈥淒oughnut Economics,鈥 ensuring a solid social foundation, respectful of our environmental ceiling.

Outside the classroom, you鈥檒l have every opportunity to experience Amsterdam on your terms. Explore the city鈥檚 165 canals, appreciate its 17th-century architecture, tour its well-preserved historic neighborhoods, eat your fill of stroopwafel, and so much more on this one-of-a-kind journey.

BUILD YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVENTURE

Designed for students who require a flexible study abroad experience, CIEE's Open Campus Block program was thoughtfully structured to be completely customizable. Select one, two, or three six-week blocks per term at any 黑料网911Open Campus Block location.

Your Destination

Immerse yourself in Amsterdam鈥檚 unique bike culture where young and old, rich and poor, electric and cargo bikes all commute on the city鈥檚 state-of-the-art cycling infrastructure. And watch out for a different urban jungle type of traffic!

Amsterdam has developed a world-class know-how for its museums and for showcasing its rich cultural heritage. This is due to the excellent preservation of historical landmarks, such as the 17th Century Canal Ring, but also to the capacity of the Dutch society to look back and critically at the darker elements of the Golden Age.

Amsterdam, like New York, is a city that (almost) never sleeps. The nightlife 鈥 ranging from the local brown caf茅s where everyone gets together and occasionally has the entire pub singing together, to world-famous DJs 鈥 is bound to have you dance the night away, reasonably of course!

黑料网911wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local 黑料网911staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Amsterdam.

Your study abroad advisor and 黑料网911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

Each six-week course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated and the workload is demanding. 黑料网911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Amsterdam when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You鈥檒l receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Courses taught at 黑料网911Amsterdam are typically for 黑料网911students only. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday and meet either two, three, or four times per week, and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas. Some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location.鈥

ASU online courses meet in 鈥渟essions鈥 that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 黑料网911courses begin or end. You鈥檒l need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you鈥檙e given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 黑料网911location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and mid-term and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 黑料网911student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.鈥 鈥淧ass/fail鈥 or 鈥淎udit鈥 is not allowed for 黑料网911students. Please see the 黑料网911Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
