Overview

Come to Madrid and take your advanced Spanish language skills to the next level in one of the world's most energetic, artistic, and multicultural cities. This Liberal Arts program is ideal for academically motivated students who only want to take courses taught in Spanish and are majoring in humanities, social sciences, journalism, economics, business, or communications.

Students will take courses at CIEE's highly selective partner school, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), and agree to speak only Spanish to facilitate language and cultural immersion. All 黑料网911students must enroll in the semester-long Advanced Spanish language course at the UC3M International School with other U.S. students 鈥 except if you are a heritage speaker. The remaining courses can be a selection of UC3M International School courses in Spanish designed for U.S. college students. Students also have the option to combine their registration with regular university courses with Spanish students on the same campus (Getafe). Outside the classroom, all courses are complemented with activities and excursions that delve deeper into Madrid's multicultural traditions.

Academics

Academics

The Liberal Arts program is designed for students with advanced Spanish language skills 鈥 five semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent 鈥 who want to immerse themselves in Spanish university life. Students may also choose to complete a for-credit internship in Madrid. Liberal Arts students choose from 黑料网911elective courses and a wide range of courses at one of CIEE鈥檚 partner institutions: Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) or Universidad Antonio Nebrija (UAN).

As you start planning for your time abroad in Spain, it鈥檚 helpful to consider how your academic experience at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) or Universidad Antonio Nebrija (UAN) may differ from what you鈥檙e used to on your US college campus, and how this enhances your scholastic learning. How will your learning preference adapt to a teacher-lecture method that emphasizes independent study? What challenges and opportunities do you anticipate with a different grading system using a 1-10 grade scale?  Think about any changes in your study habits when you register for direct enroll coursework at UC3M where nearly half your grade is based on only final assessment. Consider how your academic accommodation may require earlier and more frequent communication with 黑料网911staff before your arrival in Madrid.  What home school course requirements can be replaced with alternate course electives offered at the Spanish host university?

Courses range in areas of study, including humanities, social sciences, journalism, psychology, linguistics, or communications. Students at UAN take courses from the Centro de Estudios Hispanicos, and UC3M students can also take International School Spanish track courses; these departments are open to international students and focus on the Spanish language and culture.

Attending the 黑料网911pre-departure online orientation is important as we review the steps for your successful course registration. 黑料网911collaborates closely with the local host institutions to advise students during the in-country registration add/drop period. One of the indirect benefits of host institution classes is that 黑料网911students can learn how to collaborate with students from different cultural backgrounds, while expanding their own international job career network, and by gaining insight into the professional workings of a cross-cultural collaboration.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)鈥was established in 1989 and is recognized as Spain鈥檚 most prestigious public institution of higher education. It follows a U.S. academic calendar system for US visiting college students and has one of the highest percentages of full-time and tenured female faculty in Spain. 黑料网911students take classes on the Getafe campus, which is the main UC3M campus, located 25-40 minutes outside of downtown Madrid via efficient and modern public transit. Depending on your housing location, your commute time to campus can vary from 40 to 70 minutes in public transportation because UC3M classrooms are located outside of Madrid鈥檚 city center.

Universidad Antonio Nebrija (UAN) is internationally recognized and has offered Spanish language course instruction since 1985. The UAN academic calendar aligns with the U.S. semester calendar, and students attend classes on the Madrid, Princesa campus. The campus is quiet and centrally located in Madrid. It has excellent connections by public transport and is only 10-15 minutes from the 黑料网911Madrid Center.

黑料网911courses are offered at 黑料网911Madrid, near the Puerta del Sol 鈥 a well-known public square in the city's center.鈥

Academic Culture

Students should expect to maintain an active academic schedule that includes a variety of structured extracurricular activities with Spanish students from the university. Class attendance is mandatory, and coursework and exams are to be completed as assigned, and on schedule. Class schedules are varied and, depending on your class group sections, are offered anywhere from Monday to Friday. When choosing university courses, note that local students begin to study one area right away; they do not take general or core courses. 黑料网911students should not enroll in upper-level courses for subjects not previously studied in college. UC3M courses run from early September until early mid-to-late December in the fall, and from late January to late May in the spring. Early departure is not allowed in fall and spring. 黑料网911students take their UC3M final exams in December during the fall semester and in late May and early June during the spring semester.鈥

Class Format

University courses typically meet twice a week and classes are scheduled every day, Monday through Friday. Instruction includes lectures and practice groups. The UC3M class size averages 15-60 students. Students take classes with other international students in the UC3M International School Spanish track and UAN Centro de Estudios Hisp谩nicos and otherwise enroll in regular university courses and seminars with local and international students.鈥

Grading

Students are graded on midterm and final examinations, class participation, and attendance. Some university classes may also require term papers, group projects, or class presentations. Others may have just one oral or written final exam. Most exams consist of written essays. Professors assign numerical grades based on a 10-point scale, which 黑料网911converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. 鈥疶he Spanish university system, including the UC3M, does not apply a grade curve system as in some US higher education systems; UC3M students typically study consistently throughout the semester to pass a course successfully with the all-important final exam.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for 黑料网911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 黑料网911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
