Overview

What better place to study film production or screenwriting than Prague? A city renowned for its rich filmmaking tradition, Prague is often selected by major international film producers, making it one of Europe’s top 10 filming cities. Prague is home to many breathtaking historical sites that have become world-famous filming locations. Can you spot Prague in Spider-Man, Mission Impossible, or James Bond movies? Its urban center, rich cultural offerings, and constantly developing social scene are just a few elements that make Prague one of Europe’s most intriguing capitals.

Designed for students with experience in film production or screenwriting, the Film Studies Program provides plenty of opportunities for students to develop and polish their skills under the mentorship of professionals in the field. Choose from a wide variety of core courses and electives at the Prague Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), one of the preeminent film schools in Central Europe. Students will gain hands-on experience shooting short films and writing screenplays.

All classes are taught in English and include a two-week intensive Czech language course to facilitate cultural immersion. Outside the classroom, courses are complemented with co-curricular activities and excursions organized by ºÚÁÏÍø911beyond the city to enhance classroom learning and provide intercultural understanding.

Your Destination

Cobblestone streets, ancient bridges, and a hilltop castle help lend the City of a Hundred Spires its reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful. Prague is unique in Europe, having shed its Communist past and brimming with carefully preserved monuments from every period and style in its millennial history. There’s plenty of quirky, too, like the Zizkov Tower adorned with climbing babies and the distinctly nontraditional Dancing House. Easy to explore on foot, the city boasts a rich cultural life that includes concerts, festivals, operas, and more – many of which you can access on a student budget.

ºÚÁÏÍø911Prague is located in the central neighborhood of VyÅ¡ehrad in a beautiful park-like setting atop one of Prague’s highest hills about 15 minutes from the Old Town area.

ºÚÁÏÍø911wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local ºÚÁÏÍø911staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Prague.

The Film Studies program is designed for students with some experience in film production, screenwriting, or film studies to hone their production and writing skills. Students choose either the production track or the screenwriting track. In the production track, students create a 16-mm film, including pre-production, production, and post-production. In the screenwriting track, students begin a feature-length screenplay, completing its full treatment and writing about half of a first draft. (Note: ºÚÁÏÍø911reserves the right to combine tracks in the case of low enrollment.)

The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) is the preeminent film school in Central Europe and the 5th oldest film school in the world. Many influential filmmakers and screenwriters are FAMU alumni, including Stanislav Barabas and Oscar-winners Miloš Forman and Agnieszka Holland. FAMU is located in the city center on the banks of the Vltava River.
