Academics

Academics

The Semester In Prague program allows students to take courses in English across a wide range of academic disciplines, including business, the social and natural sciences, media and communications, psychology, arts, literature, film, history, politics, and much more.

Students begin the program with an onsite orientation that introduces them to aspects of life in Prague as well as useful Czech language basics to help facilitate cultural immersion. Students choose from classes at ºÚÁÏÍø911Prague, Charles University, the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), and the Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP).

ºÚÁÏÍø911Prague is located in a beautiful park-like setting atop one of Prague’s highest hills in the VyÅ¡ehrad neighborhood, about 15 minutes from the Old Town area. The ºÚÁÏÍø911Prague Center features classrooms, a library, a student lounge, staff offices, a café, and a large garden and patio area. Courses are taught by faculty affiliated with Charles University, Prague University of Economics, the Czech Academy of Science, and the Academy of Performing Arts, among other institutions.

Charles University was founded in 1348 and is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, ranking in the upper 1.5 percent of the world’s universities. The university consists of 17 colleges and enrolls more than 50,000 students. Students can take up to six semester credits in the Eastern and Central European Studies Department (ECES) of the Faculty of Arts or at the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV), both located in Prague’s Old Town.

The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) is the preeminent film school in Central Europe and the 5th oldest film school in the world. Students with an interest in cinema and performing arts can take up to six semester credits at FAMU, which is located in the historical district by the Vltava River.

The Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP) is the only school of architecture in Central Europe offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture and urban design taught entirely in English. ºÚÁÏÍø911students can take up to six semester credits at ARCHIP.

Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the ºÚÁÏÍø911academic calendar, so you can study abroad with ºÚÁÏÍø911while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

Your study abroad advisor and ºÚÁÏÍø911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

ºÚÁÏÍø911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas. Host Institution classes tend to be more lecture-based and students are expected to work much more independently than in the U.S., thus more time may be required for studying than students are accustomed to at their home campuses. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in ºÚÁÏÍø911classes. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Prague when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends.

Class Format

ºÚÁÏÍø911courses are primarily offered to ºÚÁÏÍø911students, however, they are also open to Charles University students and Erasmus Program students studying in Prague. Classes meet twice a week (usually Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday) for 90 minutes, or once a week for three hours, with class sizes ranging from ten to twenty students. Attendance in ºÚÁÏÍø911classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas. In addition to ºÚÁÏÍø911courses, students are encouraged to take classes at our partner institutions, including Charles University’s Faculty of Arts (ECES) and Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV), the Film and Television School at the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU), and the Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP).

Grading

ºÚÁÏÍø911reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Host Institution courses may use different grading systems.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for ºÚÁÏÍø911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and ºÚÁÏÍø911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
